According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the problem is growing fast. In 2010, Chinese entities owned roughly 81 million dollars in American farmland. By 2022, that number exploded to 1.9 billion dollars.

That is a massive increase in just over ten years. And those are just the purchases we know about. Many experts fear the real numbers are much higher.

Our founding fathers knew the importance of land ownership. They knew that whoever owns the land holds the power. We are slowly handing that power to foreign adversaries.

A Major Threat to National Security

Food security is just one part of the problem. Many of these land purchases pose a direct military threat. Hostile nations often use business deals to hide spy operations.

In 2021, a Chinese agribusiness called Fufeng Group made a shocking purchase. They bought 370 acres of farmland in Grand Forks, North Dakota. They claimed they wanted to build a corn milling plant.

But the location raised major red flags in Washington. The land was located just 12 miles from the Grand Forks Air Force Base. This specific military base is incredibly important.

It houses some of America’s top drone technology. It also handles highly classified military operations. Putting a Chinese-owned facility that close is a massive security risk.

Our lawmakers immediately sounded the alarm. U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer, John Hoeven, and Marco Rubio sent a letter to the federal government. They demanded a strict national security review.

In their joint letter, the Senators wrote that the property’s location led to major concerns. They warned that Fufeng operations could provide cover for Chinese surveillance. They also noted the company’s reported ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The U.S. Air Force eventually agreed with these concerns. They issued a warning stating that the project presented a significant threat to national security. The local city council finally stepped in to stop the development.

But the Fufeng incident proves a chilling point. Our enemies are looking for ways to get close to our military bases. They are using farmland as a convenient excuse.

Imagine if America tried to buy land next to a Chinese military base. The Chinese government would never allow it. They would laugh us out of the room.

Yet, we leave our front door wide open. We trust the free market too much when dealing with communist regimes. The free market only works between free and honest people.

We cannot rely on local city councils to defend our military. We need strong federal laws to block these sales. Our national defense must come first.

Who Is Guarding Our Food Supply?

Representative Stefanik said, “Food security is national security, and I’m proud to reintroduce this legislation that will stand up against our foreign adversaries as they attempt to control our agriculture industry.”

The PASS Act aims to fix our broken system. It includes several strong protections for our country:

• It forces the U.S. Department of Agriculture to track ownership data better.
• It requires strict national security reviews for foreign agriculture deals.

Many states are not waiting for Washington to act. Over a dozen states have passed their own laws. They are banning or limiting foreign land grabs within their borders.

But state laws are not enough. We need a unified, national shield. We need a strong federal response to protect every single acre of American soil.
